Thumbnail of Oru Paanai 2025 Oru Paanai, a UK based charity was intitated in 2008 by Dr. Dan Muthuveloe and friends in response to appeals from head teachers about the levels of poverty and starvation among schoolchildren. Until 2018 we focused on supplementing the midday meal provided by World Food programme . In 2018 when the Government of SL took over the midday meal provision we shifted our focus to other areas. At present Oru Paanai is undertaking the following projects: - Feeding elderly: This program supports approximately 1,600 deprived individuals and young families in extreme food poverty, by providing 4 weekly distribution of essential staples such as rice, rice flour, wheat flour, sugar, and dhal etc.
- Nutrition for malnourished Preschool children : Nutritional supplements (Sathu Ma) distributed to over 1,000 underweight children.
- Water Wells in the Vanni: To date, we have constructed over 220 wells. Each well costs about Rs. 400,000 (approx. £1,000) and can transform a community.
- Bursaries for Undergraduates: We have begun awarding bursaries to over 30 university students from poor backgrounds.
- Empowerment projects for independent living: Poultry farming and Goat farming projects
